Correctly Siting Fly Killers

When it comes to getting the best protection from you fly killer ensure you install it in the optimum position. Regardless of how much you paid for your fly killer or how big it is unless you place it in the right position you are not going to see it performing at its best. There are many things to consider when installing a fly killer and not just put next to the nearest free power socket.

  • If flies can't see the light they won't fly towards it.

  • Avoid competing light from the sun or artificial light.

  • Don't place units too high about 6'6" or 2 metres to the bottom of the fly killer is best.

  • Place the fly killer between entrance points.

  • Don't place it near or above food preparation areas, the intention of the fly killer is to attract flies away from food that is going to be consumed.

  • Keep fly killers away from doors and windows where the draft could blow fly particles away from the machine.

  • Place fly killers where they are accessible for cleaning, service and repair.

Consider the location

Before making your choice of fly killer and I don't mean fly killer brand, you should give some thought to where and how it is going to be used.

  • Are there any harsh chemicals damage plastics or corrode metals.

  • What is the temperature, is it too low or too high for the fly killer to function properly.

  • Does the environment carry a risk of explosion, you may be surprised by the type of factories that do pose a risk of explosion.

  • Are there liquids present, do you need an IP rated product.

  • Is it a dusty environment, will the dust settle on sticky boards.

  • The fly population, what are the target species, is there anything contributing to infestation.

Important things to remember

To maintain optimum performance from your fly killer you need you to clean and service it regularly, we recommend.

  • Change the lamps every 12 months, ideally in the spring ready for the start of the flying insect season.

  • Change glue boards every 3 months or sooner if they become full.

  • Clean and empty collection trays, don't leave them overflowing with flies.

  • Check electric grids are working on electrocution type fly killers.

  • It is important to use the correct fly killer lamps, these are UV blacklight lamps, standard white lamps won't attract flies and UVB and UVC lamps are dangerous if fitted to a fly killer.
